Pecan gets it's base coat!

We have had a GREAT crew of HP families and Scouts from Pack 59 come out this fall to scrub, sand, and caulk the Pecan portable, and finally give it it's beautiful blue base coat. The Scouts that participated will be receiving a badge for thier service in maintaining and beautifying the school, and the project will be registered with the BSA Good Turn for America program. Way to go!

Here we are at the end of the school year and we wish to thank all of those who came out in heat and cold to help beautify the campus and help teach the kids a little more about the native Texas trees. The painting of the Live Oak is almost complete, and it's a treat to see the branches unfold as the many volunteers paint them on. This weekend Margaret Menicucci, Katherine Altenbaugh, David Lynch, Elizabeth Alford, Tina Landry, Cynthia Breed, Brenda and Thad Henry, and Juliee Beyt worked together like a well-oiled machine, almost finishing the painting for the season. West end is done!

We had a breezy day to wrap up the west end while the kids played, and found, after many frustrating days of bleeding paint, a new trick to keep the paint from bleeding! This portable has a bumpier surface than the rest have, and the paint has bled through the application tape, needing lots of touch-up. A lucky experiemnt found a much stickier masking tape to the rescue, and no more bleeding! Baron, Elizabeth, Frances, David, Juliee, Wendy, and Kathy Altenbaugh were pleased to pull off that tape and see how clean the edges were. After a rainy start, a great and talented crew got to work on the Northeast corner of Live Oak and put some lovely leaves on the branches, really bringing that tree to life! We got some great weather and a terrific start this weekend on the Live Oak thanks to a wonderful group! It's wonderful to see the canopy of the tree emerge on the sides of the building and under the shade of the little Live Oak grove while the children played all around us. Parents? Painting? Portables?....yes! It’s true, we are happy to say that there is yet another opportunity to join your friends and make new ones while we take some time out of our always busy schedules to stand under the Oak trees and paint images of their shadows on the side of the portable by the kinder playground...nestled under the canopy of the oaks (the Scores portable). Go take a look...the drawings are already up on the walls! sky blue….you may think that your aren’t artistic and so you will leave this job to others…Stephanie Wilson, Juliee Beyt, Elizabeth Alford, Frances Brooks and Wendy Dunnam Tita would like for you to know that we can use your talents. For all of you who have contributed this year to beautifying the Highland Park Campus, Hurrah!...We have accomplished so much….To anyone who has been thinking about joining the effort, this is your chance!

You may have been thinking about volunteering all year…..you may think that we were finished when the portable classroom buildings were transformed from dust beige to subtle

Portable no. 5...has been designated the Live Oak! And we will be painting a graphic design inspired by these gorgeous trees on Saturday May 8th & Sunday May 9th and Saturday May 15th. These will be all-day sessions starting at 8am. You can join us for an hour or more and you do not have to be “artistic” to contribute. Kids are welcome and can be easily watched from the Live Oak portable as they play on the Perry Playground! Saturday May 8th will be Family Day with a group-lunch at noon at the kinder-covered area.

We had a busy weekend with lots of energy and enthusiasm...and it shows! After two long and productive days, one beautfiul and one rainy, the proud team of volunteers wrapped up Buckeye and put away the paint. It's My Park Day in Perry Park is a Success!

We had a great group of neighbors out to plant, mulch, and clean trails at Perry Park on March 6th for Austin's annual It's My Park Day. What a beautiful day we had to be outdoors! The trails in the woods are really overgrown and it quickly became apparant that this was an assessment weekend for what lay ahead: more weekends of path clearing and Lantana removal! So get ready for a big push after Spring Break, where we'll be rallying a crowd to remove dead branches and the masses of Lantana that have overtaken the trails. Year-End Wrap-up

Many thanks to all who came out in 2009 to lend a hand to the HP Beautiful project. We got a lot done this year thanks to the help of the HP Parents and Neighbors: cleaned, prepped & painted all 5 of the existing portables, finished Sycamore and Bur Oak, and just about finished Redbud. We got Buckeye and Redbud saplings planted and look forward to seeing them grow in the spring. As soon as it warms up a bit, we'll get out and touch up Redbud, then get started with the leaf applications on Buckeye and Live Oak.

Future HP Beautification projects await, and we couldn't do it without the continued volunteer efforts, and support of our wonderful PTA, Principal and staff. We hope to see some more of that fantastic HP volunteer spirit out there this Spring to wrap up this project!

HP Gets a Fall Landscape Makeover!

Thanks to Margaret Menicucci and Wes Amberboy for organizing the Fall Landscape cleanup to the front of the school! LOADS of trees and plants were trimmed and readied for winter, beds were cleared, and invasive plants were removed to get the front of the school looking ship-shape. Also thanks to Nadene Morning for donating a Mexican Buckeye tree, and to Sean Compton for planting it and the Redbud sapling, near the Redbud and Buckeye portables on the West side of the school. Bur Oak & Sycamore are finished!

Just in time for the Bur Oak acorns to start dropping on the ground, the Bur Oak & Sycamore leaves have finished 'falling'. The rain stopped and the teams had some lovely days to apply the layers of color. Stop by and see the shadow of the real leaves on the sides of the buildings, overlaid with the stenciled leaves to see the full affect. New leaves have been layered onto Sycamore this weekend, and have begun to appear on Bur Oak as well. Now the range of spring green, mature green, and late autumn green leaf colors can be seen, and is beautiful. Fall is here at last, and the leaves are falling...and appearing on our pretty portables. We began today with the first layer of Sycamore and are thrilled to see this stage upon us at last. If you are on campus any time soon, you'll now see that Phase 1 of the Portable Beautification project is just about wrapped up. A friendly crew spent Father's Day amiably sprucing up the once-brown doors, and now they are all a lovely shade of Waterbury Green, to compliment the base Homestead Blue. In a word…Inspired! With a few more words we could describe the activities at our school the last few weekend: Fun, hard work, power washing, paint scraping, paint rolling, fabulous volunteers, hot heat, cool looking “Homestead Green”, donuts, pizza, Juliee’s fabulous ice tea, reggae music, tall ladders, nice neighbors with cookies, small helpers, big helpers, in short, people who love our kids and our school doing some really GREAT WORK!
It’s not too late to join the Highland Park Beautiful Campaign. The NEXT structured work weekend of the summer work on the Portable Classroom Buildings will be next Saturday and Sunday (June 20-21).

We will be painting the last of the portable field color along with the doors. We could really use your helpful hands anytime between 7:00 am-1:00 pm those two days. We guarantee that you will leave feeling like you have really been part of what makes our school extraordinary; people who care deeply about their children, school and community.

Day 4: Paint Brigade-lots of progress!

It's easy to remember what we're all out here for: making it a great environment for all of the kids to grow and learn. The kids really enjoyed pitching in and painting alongside the adults. Below, Stephanie is showing the color palette for the portables against the existing HP brick color. It was a busy painterly day for this crew...we followed the shade and painted on the 'cool'. Next weekend, we'll finish up some detail work and do the doors/door trim. Then we can get started on the stencil/embellishments. Hope to see some of you out there with us in the weeks to come. Possible Hidden Gem? Who knew?!

Yesterday, it was discovered that the original building material for the gymnasium was a pale blue precast concrete panel with blue/green aggregate. You could have knocked us over with a feather! This explains the various teal paint colors all around the HP campus...and may be a 'Phase 5' in the making. A little careful paint removal on those panels would reveal a wall that would coordinate with the portables colors.

New Arrival: Pecan Portable Arriving this summer

AISD has staked out the location of the newest portable set to arrive to the HP campus sometime this summer. It will be oriented with its long wall along the bamboo on the edge of the (former) kickball field. This image shows just about the length of where it will be (just to the left of the sign by the swingset). This will be the PECAN portable, our state tree, and will be cleaned and painted after it arrives.

Isn't it always so satisfying to see the paint go up after all that prep work? Well, today was no exception....we stood back and really enjoyed the crisp new color on those portables and felt some real collective joy. It is said that only mad dogs and Englismen go out in the noonday sun, but you'd have to add some dedicated HP Painting-Parents to that list, 'cause we weren't going home until we were halfway done......and we'll be back out there tomorrow, and next weekend, too. Of 201 votes cast. there were 105 Blue votes & 92 Green votes, 3 either way and 1 neither way. Considering school, community, and neighbor feedback, the portable colors will be based on the Blue color scheme. Next to each door, a painted 'button' will be placed, for room identification, teachers' posts, and class names. This will provide teachers with a place to post outside their doors, and keep the embellishments staple-free.

Portables Locations

Each portable will be designated with a tree found throughout Texas, and the leaf-shadow pattern of that tree will be painted on that portable. The trees will be Sycamore, Live Oak, Buckeye, Redbud, Bur Oak, and Pecan.
