Year-End Wrap-up

Many thanks to all who came out in 2009 to lend a hand to the HP Beautiful project. We got a lot done this year thanks to the help of the HP Parents and Neighbors: cleaned, prepped & painted all 5 of the existing portables, finished Sycamore and Bur Oak, and just about finished Redbud.  We got Buckeye and Redbud saplings planted and look forward to seeing them grow in the spring. As soon as it warms up a bit, we'll get out and touch up Redbud, then get started with the leaf applications on Buckeye and Live Oak.

Future HP Beautification projects await, and we couldn't do it without the continued volunteer efforts, and support of our wonderful PTA, Principal and staff.  We hope to see some more of that fantastic HP volunteer spirit out there this Spring to wrap up this project!
Here's where we left off with Redbud, come on out when it gets warm and we'll touch 'er up!

HP Gets a Fall Landscape Makeover!

Thanks to Margaret Menicucci and Wes Amberboy for organizing the Fall Landscape cleanup to the front of the school! LOADS of trees and plants were trimmed and readied for winter, beds were cleared, and invasive plants were removed to get the front of the school looking ship-shape. Also thanks to Nadene Morning for donating a Mexican Buckeye tree, and to Sean Compton for planting it and the Redbud sapling, near the Redbud and Buckeye portables on the West side of the school.  The landscape cleanup will be looking for a few MORE good hands soon to do some MULCHING....so contact Wes or Margaret if you'd like to pitch in for the Winter mulch event. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622733744845/show/

The new Mexican Buckeye near the 'Buckeye' portable - thanks Nadene and Sean!

Come out next weekend and we'll finish Redbud!

Despite the cooler temperatures and mist this weekend, Frances, Sandy, Margaret, Alexis and David came out and enjoyed adding some leaves to Redbud.  It was nice to see the third color go up, and to see some sections finished! We'll be painting again Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving 12:00- on, so come join us if you have some time.  E-mail jdaz@att.net if you can make it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622858177718/show/

Redbud gets started!

Beautiful days, now, to be outside painting, and this lucky team took full advantage and made some progress with the Redbud stencils. We're looking forward to a follow-up session next weekend, Sat. Nov. 21 @ 12:30, so if you think you can make it send jdaz@att.net an e-mail and we'd love to put you on a team! Many thanks to Thad Henry, Sandy Tipton, Ray Calderon, Michael Young, David Lynch, Nathan Phillips, and David Tasch for lending lots of hands to us and getting this weekend off to a great start! Take a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622686581647/show/

Bur Oak & Sycamore are finished!

Just in time for the Bur Oak acorns to start dropping on the ground, the Bur Oak & Sycamore leaves have finished 'falling'. The rain stopped and the teams had some lovely days to apply the layers of color. Stop by and see the shadow of the real leaves on the sides of the buildings, overlaid with the stenciled leaves to see the full affect. Pictures of the process can bee seen here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622809590468/show/ & http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622685466901/show/

New leaves have been layered onto Sycamore this weekend, and have begun to appear on Bur Oak as well. Now the range of spring green, mature green, and late autumn green leaf colors can be seen, and is beautiful. Thanks to Baron, Michael, Nathan, Suzy, Diana,& Elizabeth for the productive weekend, it all looks Great!

Teacher's Post-Boards are Up!

Now there's a designated spot for teachers and homeroom parents to post information to the class--each posting-board has Room number, Portable name, and Leaf illustration. Thanks to Frances for keeping us on task and getting them lettered, Christian for cutting the boards, and Wendy for hanging them...what a team effort this has been!

Leaves up! Weekend one of Stenciling a success!

Fall is here at last, and the leaves are falling...and appearing on our pretty portables. We began today with the first layer of Sycamore and are thrilled to see this stage upon us at last. Leaves will continue to appear for the next 5-6 weeks. The post-boards are underway and will be installed next to each teacher's door as well. Thanks again to early-risers Stella, Frances, and Elizabeth, Frank & David for painting with Wendy, Elizabeth, Stephanie and I this weekend. For more pics of the process seee: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jubilee88/sets/72157622400630237/show/ More painterly volunteers are needed each weekend day through the end of October--if you wish to join us, contact volunteer coordinator Stephanie Wilson @ sw@stephaniewilsoninteriors.com

Pecan Portable has Arrived! ("Paint Me......!")

It's here! AISD dropped Pecan portable down over by the former kickball field...now we're just waiting for some other maintenance items. So, while some of us work with AISD to get this wrapped up, we need a crew and crew leader to get organized to paint Pecan, while others of us get organized to stencil Bur Oak, & Sycamore. Calling all volunteers! Are you able to get a crew or be on a crew to paint Pecan? Do you have pretty good painting skills, and want to help with the stenciling? Give us a holler! >>sw@stephaniewilsoninteriors.com or jdaz@att.net can't wait to hear from you, if you do!

Paint Brigade Day 6: all wrapped up!

If you are on campus any time soon, you'll now see that Phase 1 of the Portable Beautification project is just about wrapped up. A friendly crew spent Father's Day amiably sprucing up the once-brown doors, and now they are all a lovely shade of Waterbury Green, to compliment the base Homestead Blue. Next weekend, we'll be looking for a bunch to help paint the insides of the doors/frames. Are you free to help? If so, please contact kgolliher@austin.rr.com for next Saturday's crew time.

What's next?

In a word…Inspired! With a few more words we could describe the activities at our school the last few weekend: Fun, hard work, power washing, paint scraping, paint rolling, fabulous volunteers, hot heat, cool looking “Homestead Green”, donuts, pizza, Juliee’s fabulous ice tea, reggae music, tall ladders, nice neighbors with cookies, small helpers, big helpers, in short, people who love our kids and our school doing some really GREAT WORK!
It’s not too late to join the Highland Park Beautiful Campaign. The NEXT structured work weekend of the summer work on the Portable Classroom Buildings will be next Saturday and Sunday (June 20-21).

We will be painting the last of the portable field color along with the doors. We could really use your helpful hands anytime between 7:00 am-1:00 pm those two days. We guarantee that you will leave feeling like you have really been part of what makes our school extraordinary; people who care deeply about their children, school and community.

Please email Wendy Dunnam Tita (wdt@dunnamdodson.com) to let us know if/when you can join us. It will help us plan our work (and supplies) to know who been on our crew for the day(s).

THANK YOU! wdt

Day 4: Paint Brigade-lots of progress!

It's easy to remember what we're all out here for: making it a great environment for all of the kids to grow and learn. The kids really enjoyed pitching in and painting alongside the adults. Below, Stephanie is showing the color palette for the portables against the existing HP brick color. It was a busy painterly day for this crew...we followed the shade and painted on the 'cool'. Next weekend, we'll finish up some detail work and do the doors/door trim. Then we can get started on the stencil/embellishments. Hope to see some of you out there with us in the weeks to come. We've really enjoyed the camaraderie of working together and meeting other HP parents, and would like to work with more of you!
